Sine
Disciplines: Industrial Design - CMF
Design Team: Rafer Stromme
Time: Fall-Spring 2022
Sine is a furniture set envisioned to exist in small environments. Sine envisions a space of slowing within the rapid pace of life. Simulating the calmness of resting afloat a rolling wave.

Process
Initial concepts were explored through repeated sketching, both high and low fidelity. A few concepts proved lead to deeper exploration due to their novel forms and seat styles.
Two directions were explored in 1/6” scale models
Identifying the inspiration
At this point. in time it was helpful to identify the inspiration giving form to the chair. The rhythmic flow of a wave; the organic surface forms of water; and the dramatic arcs created in cloth as it is draped over the human figure.
Scale models and prototyping was valuable at every stage of the design process. From exploration to form development and refinement.
Exploring connection methods for the base and seat of the chair lead to a hardware based connection method. The connection was found to be advantageous due to its deconstructable and minimal nature.
Full scale models were helpful for identifying desirable dimensions and proportions.
CMF Identification
Exploring possible CMF opportunities was helpful to identify how the CMF could differentiate this design from other bent plywood furniture on the market.
Light Wood
Satin aluminum
Warm sherpa
A light wood/satin aluminum/warm sherpa palette was selected to provide a warm and inviting tone across the furniture. The satin aluminum provides a point of contrast with the soft nature of wood and fabric. It also calls attention to the connection of the seat and base highlighting the chairs' simplicity in construction.
Manufacturing
A prototype of the chair is being developed into a 1:1 functional model. The bent plywood will be approximately ⅞” thick. The cushion will be a polyester upholstery sherpa on top of an upholstery foam backed by a hard shell. The connection will feature an aluminum spacer with barrel screws compressing the 3 pieces together.
